Leftover Turkey ~ Share it with your dogs!

Here's a great recipe for using up that leftover turkey.

Lazy Turkey Loaf (for dogs)

Makes 6 servings
2 pounds ground turkey
1/2 cup cooked vegetables
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 egg
1/2 cup quick-cook barley
1 cup quick-cook oats
4 ounces canned no-fat gravy

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a mixing bowl combine turkey, vegetables, garlic powder, egg, barley and oats. Mix thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into a greased loaf pan and pat down meat mixture until level. Spread gravy on top of loaf and bake for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Cool and cut into six even slices. Store unused portions in refrigerator.

The Bark Magazine

The Bark Magazine is our favorite and always has timely relevant articles of interest to pet owners.

This month it has a section on Do It Yourself dog related crafts including a crochet dog collar, a crocheted pet mat and a toy chest.

We highly recommend their reasonable rates for subscriptions and it not basically ads with a few article fillers as we see in most magazines. Annual subscription is $15 with $10 renewals. I gave them as Christmas gifts last year and got a rate of $10 for each one including my own.

Dogs in Danger Website

We have come across a great new website Dogs In Danger.

It is just that, a listing of dogs that are in shelters whose days are numbered before they will be humanely euthanized. While we are opposed to kill shelters in theory, the unfortunate truth is that hundreds if not thousands of dogs are euthanized daily due to lack of space and funding all across the US.

A search can be done by zip code, state or breed.

Cooking for Your Dog

We home cook for our dogs here at the Yorkie Crested Cavalier Castle. Truth be told, they eat better than we do.

We cooked for our dogs before the pet food recalls. I became convinced that kibble was not the best dog food available once I started reading ingredient lists. The dog food industry is starting to respond to the demand for healthy pet food and today there are some good quality holistic dog foods available. I do supplement occasionally with kibble as an added insurance that my dogs are getting a balanced meal nutritionally. Dogs have different nutrition requirements and if you cook for your dogs you might consider a pet multi vitamin supplement.

I would suggest you talk to your vet. Most vets are skeptical of home cooked diets for dogs but they are not experts; very little emphasis is placed on diet and nutrition in vet school. Some vets are more open to this concept than others. My vet reacted negatively at first but is coming around after I had him do a blood panel screening and found that all of the necessary nutrients were within the acceptable range.

You can cook occasionally for your dog even if you feed kibble. After all, we like variety and your dogs will too! You need not be concerned if you cook occasionally for special occasions for your dog. If you are feeding over 50% of their diet with home cooked meals, I would suggest you do some homework about canine nutrition. There are several informative sites on the web about canine nutrition. There are also several books available at Amazon.

After doing a lot of research, I use a premix for 50% of their diet and I highly recommends Dr. Harvey's Canine Health. The other 50% of their diet is home cooked meals. This is a balance that works for us, you will need to find what is right for you and your dogs.
